Hardenhuish Headlines

Dear Parents and Carers

The Year 7s have had a wonderful time at Liddington this week, enjoying the activities and getting to know each other at the beginning of their Hardenhuish Career. I hope that they have come home with lots of stories about their adventures and not too much wet and muddy washing! Thank you to the Year 7 Team and all of the Staff and Sixth Formers who made this such a positive experience.

Please see linked two leaflets we have been asked to share by the Police to help foster a safer environment for all road users and raise awareness about the risks associated with e-scooters and to ensure that e-scooter riding is a safe and positive experience for everyone.

It has been lovely to see young people engaged in so much extra-curricular this week – the Hardenhuish v Sheldon Varsity competition hangs firmly in the balance at 3 all after the Rugby matches this week! Please encourage your young person to check the list and get involved in the many fantastic opportunities on offer.

I am looking forward to Sixth Form Open evening next week when we can show off our amazing facilities to our current Year 11 and interested external candidates to help them make their decisions about what they will go on to do after their GCSEs.

Have a good weekend – long may this autumn sunshine continue.

Focus on… Trips and Visits

We continue to work hard to ensure that young people have as many opportunities for trips and visits to enhance their school experience as possible. We aim to launch trips and visits with as much notice as possible and to ensure that for the higher value trips, payment plans are provided to make them as affordable as possible to all pupils.

Please find linked below an overview of the trips and visits that we are aware of so far by term and year group for the 2024/5 academic year with their approximate costs. More details will be shared as costings and staffing are finalised. We are doing our best to adapt to demand and have added extra places to several trips recently where demand has significantly exceeded the originally available places. We may also however not run trips if there is not sufficient interest to make them viable. We are grateful to staff across the school who plan, manage, administrate, and accompany these trips and visits and thank you for your support as parents of these amazing enrichment opportunities for our young people.

The Great Hardenhuish Reading Challenge

This week saw the start of the Great Hardenhuish Reading Challenge. This student-led initiative was the idea of Year 13 student Josh Bailey, who was keen to launch a competition that would generate excitement around reading and inspire pupils to explore new genres.

The challenge is open to pupils in Years 7, 8, and 9, and involves them reading four books from different genres. Once pupils have read a book, they can visit the Library and tell a Year 12 Library Ambassador about their book to get their challenge booklet signed. Each book read will earn pupils an ace & a raffle ticket entering them into a prize draw with chances to win WH Smith vouchers!

Good luck to all the pupils getting involved. We can’t wait to hear about the interesting books you have been reading!

Racing to School

On Tuesday, some of our Year 8 pupils took part in an exciting trip to Bath racecourse to learn all about the mathematics behind horse racing. The pupils were given a unique look behind the scenes and learnt all about the maths required to ensure that the racecourse runs smoothly and that all the rules are adhered to. Dressed in racing colours of past famous jockeys, the pupils were allowed to walk on the actual racecourse and were even allowed to stage their own race! Much to their delight, the pupils were then able to watch some actual races. Pupils viewed the horses in the parade ring prior to the race, then each pupil, having selected their favourite horse, watched the race to see how their chosen horse fared. The pupils were thrilled to see it was the jockey they had met earlier in the day who had won! The day gave a great insight into the use of mathematics in everyday life, and it was great to see the pupils have such a fun and interactive experience.

England Athlete Talent Pathway

Congratulations to Y11 pupil Tommy Mattis-King, who as a result of his performances, has been invited to take part in a number of training sessions as part of the England athlete Talent Pathway. The training days aim to support athletes who have displayed potential for future selection within this programme. We wish Tommy the best of luck with this fantastic opportunity.
