Hardenhuish Headlines

Dear Parents

We have marked Armistice Day today with the playing of the Last Post and a silence at 11am. Our young people were as always appropriately respectful and many of our young people who are members of uniformed organisations have shown their respect by wearing their uniforms.

There has been good engagement with UK Parliament Week and it has been good to talk to our young people about their part in our future.

Now that the weather has well and truly turned autumnal, please can I ask you to remind your young people to bring or wear a waterproof coat to school.

We have been informed by the transport team at Wiltshire that there is a change of pick-up time for the Marshfield school bus 636 from Monday 20/11/2023. The morning bus will now depart Marshfield 10 minutes earlier. This change is needed to improve the arrival time of the bus in Chippenham and its onward journey to Lackham. Please see here for further details.

PPCE and PSCE stand for Parent and Pupil Consultation Evening and Parent and Student Consultation Evening respectively. PPCEs are held for pupils in Year 7 to 11 and PSCEs are for students in the Sixth Form. Each year group has one PPCE/PSCE scheduled during the year.

PPCE/PSCEs are opportunities for parents and pupils to meet with subject teachers and tutors to discuss the progress being made. They are organised alongside the reporting cycle that provide parents with information about progress during each school term and provide opportunities for parents and pupils/students to ask questions about the learning that is taking place and planned, the learning aptitudes reported on, and the progress being made. Staff also provide information about specific areas for improvement and targets that that the pupil/student needs to work on in order to make progress.

PPCEs and PSCEs are scheduled to last from 3.30 to 7:30 p.m. and these take place on Microsoft Teams with parents being able to book 5 minute appointments with each of their child’s teachers online. If parents are unable to make an appointment on Teams, and request it, staff should make contact through a phone call at a mutually convenient time agreed with the parent in the days following. If, in exceptional circumstances, staff are unable to attend a PPCE/PSCE, parents will be informed so that an alternative consultation can be arranged if necessary.

WW1 Day

Our annual WW1 Day was once again a wonderful event. We had three external workshop leaders bring a new set of resources and ideas for the main part of the day. Pupils took part in object handling, where they looked at the weight and size of rifles, shrapnel, grenades and other items from life in the trenches. This session was then followed by trench medicine, where they learned how to bandage under fire and carry wounded soldiers on stretchers, whilst the third activity included learning drill and how to conduct themselves in a soldierly spirit. The final workshop was on remembering the fallen and in particular those from Wiltshire with no known grave. In the afternoon, groups were back together as a tutor team and were tasked with putting together a display to symbolise the learning from the day. It was fabulous to see so many members of staff getting dressed up for the event too and hopefully it was a memorable experience for all of Year 9. Included are some photos of the work produced by the different groups.

Dear Parents

As part of our ongoing fundraising efforts, the Friends of Hardenhuish are about to launch the Christmas Raffle for 2023. This year we are raising funds for a very exciting project; completing a new fitness suite in the school’s gymnasium and refurbishment of the changing rooms. We are delighted to be able to offer a star prize of a Dyson V15 Absolute cordless vacuum cleaner, RRP £699, courtesy of the James Dyson Foundation.

We also have a number of other prizes such as a family ticket to Bowood, an Oral B electric toothbrush and WHSmith vouchers, however, in order to boost sales, we welcome any additional prizes that you may be willing to donate. If you have connections with any companies who are willing to offer us a prize for the raffle (such as tickets to events or vouchers for money off) or if you would like to donate something personally like a Christmas hamper or wine or chocolates, we would be very grateful. Please email events@hardenhuish.wilts.sch.uk to let us know if you can help.

Tickets for the raffle will go on sale next Friday on Arbor and the grand draw will be made at the Christmas Fayre on Friday 8 December.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Parent Information Advice and Guidance Meeting

On Wednesday 15th November we have the Mental Health and Wellbeing PIAG from 6.30pm – 8pm which will take place in the Peter Thompson Hall. This is an opportunity to look at ways in which you can support your child with their mental health and find out about what systems we have in place within school. We will also be advising about strategies that can be used to improve mental health and wellbeing.

This is for parents of all year groups and we look forward to hopefully seeing lots of you at this event!

U12 Girls County cup – Abbey Park 1 Hardenhuish 7

An excellent start was made by our U12 football team who won by 6 goals against APS. For their first match I was really impressed with how the team worked together and really took their chances. We had a positive 1st quarter by taking a 2 nil lead, with the first goal being calmy converted by Amy and then the 2nd goal coolly slotted away by Madison. The 2nd quarter APS applied a bit more pressure on our defensive line which resulted in a well-deserved goal. This seemed to fire the U12s up and after half time they came out fighting with Maria and Sufia scoring 4 goals between them to restore our lead. Esmie finished off the last quarter with a lovely, chipped goal. Special mention needs to go to Esmie, Aria and Sufia all taking a turn in goal to ensure everyone got on a chance to play outfield.  MVP was chosen by APS and was rewarded to Sufia for her excellent hat-trick, and 2 epic saves in goal.

Well done to all and bring on the next round!

Netball Success!

Congratulations to Year 11 Sophie Vaughan on her selection to Team Bath U17.  Sophie took to court for Team Bath at Bath University Sports Training Village on Saturday 4 November in a friendly against rivals Severn Stars. The game was fast paced with some fabulous passages of play; the squad’s strong performance saw Bath take the win 60-30.
