Hardenhuish Headlines

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a busy end to term with the Key Stage 5 Art, Photography and DT Showcase and Year 11 leaving us for Study Leave.

The Showcase on Thursday was a fantastic display of the talents of our young people and it was lovely to see their work being appreciated and celebrated.

Year 11 left us yesterday to begin their study leave. We wish them well over the coming weeks as they continue with their GCSEs and prepare for the adventures ahead in September. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Peake, Mrs Andrews and the Year 11 Team for all of the support they have provided the year group, particularly in recent months. I know they are going to miss the Year 11s being around but look forward to celebrating with them at Prom next term, and when they receive their results in the summer.

Have a restful May break and I hope that your young people will come back rested and ready for Term 6 on Monday 1st June.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Focus on – PSHE

PSHE, which stands for Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education, is taught at Hardenhuish School to provide students with a comprehensive education that goes beyond academic subjects. The primary goal of PSHE is to equip students with essential life skills and knowledge necessary for their personal development and well-being. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including mental and physical health, relationships, financial literacy, and citizenship, aiming to empower students to make informed decisions and navigate the challenges they may encounter in various aspects of their lives. By addressing social and emotional aspects, promoting healthy lifestyles, and fostering a sense of responsibility and citizenship, PSHE contributes to the overall development of students, helping them become well-rounded individuals capable of handling the complexities of the modern world.

Physically Active Learning Study

Last year, a small number of Hardenhuish students took part in a research project led by Lara Hollander, a PhD researcher at the University of Bristol, exploring students’ views on Physically Active Learning — using movement as part of classroom learning.

Lara is continuing to develop this work further, helping to build a deeper understanding of how movement may support learning and wellbeing in schools.

The graphic below shares some of the early findings from the study at Hardenhuish.

PE Information

Please could we take this opportunity as a reminder that school shoes cannot be worn for PE. Pupils are expected to bring in trainers and/or boots depending on the activity.  Pupils will be sanctioned with equipment conduct card points if they forget to bring in a change of shoe. We are seeing an increasing number of pupils choosing to wear their school shoes so the holiday may be a good chance to make sure there is an alternative pair ready for next term.

Please would all Year 11 pupils consider donating their unwanted PE kit to the PE Department? It is well used as spare kit when pupils need to borrow items of clothing.  In particular, we would like skorts, green and black socks and any fleeces/windproof jackets.  Please bring any clean items either to reception or straight to the PE Department.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Team PE.

Health and Social Care

Last week the Year 10 Health and Social Care students enjoyed a workshop facilitated by Jenny Treen-Smith, an Independent Speech and Language Therapist.   During the workshop, Jenny talked about her work with service users and how person centered values link to her practice.  This was a fabulous opportunity for the students to learn more about the rewards of working in the Health and Social care sector and how theory links to this.  Thank you so much for your time Jenny, the students really valued your visit.

RE Learning Brought to Life!

Our Year 7 students have ended their module on Sanātana Dharma (formerly known as Hinduism) with a burst of colour and creativity. They have been busy designing and building their own miniature Sanātani shrines inside shoeboxes, complete with murtis of deities, items from a puja tray, and other symbolic elements they have learned about in class. The project has been a joyful way for students to bring their RE learning to life!
