Hardenhuish Headlines

Dear Parents

Welcome back to Term 5!

It has been a busy week already with many practical exams taking place and the Year 10 mocks starting today. We have welcomed visitors from  St Maarten’s school in Holland who spent the day with us on Thursday and many of our Year 8 have spent most of the week in Spain.

As you will be aware jumpers were optional from this Monday, but we are working hard to keep uniform standards high so Pastoral Offices may be in touch if there are any areas of concern in relation to your young person’s uniform.

Please could you support us in reminding your young people to make sure that they are considering their own safety and that of others on the way to and from school. We have had a few near misses with pupils running out in front of cars both on the school site and neighbouring roads and we need to do everything we can to prevent an accident.

As we move into the warmer months, there is more going on in the Chippenham Community for our young people to get involved with. Please keep an eye on the community page of the website for information about upcoming events such as the Chippenham Teen Takeover and please let us know if there are local events that you would like us to share. Equally it is lovely to share in the successes of our young people outside of school as in a couple of the items below so please send these in to admin@hardenhuish.wilts.sch.uk .

I am looking forward to Culture Week next week when we welcome a number of visitors to add some fantastic cultural learning to the experiences of our young people.

Please see here the Extra-Curricular – Hardenhuish School for this term. As always, there are a wide range of amazing opportunities for our young people to get involved with outside of their lessons. Please encourage them to use the warmer (!) weather and lighter evenings to take advantage as much as possible.

Thank you in advance for all of the support that you will give your young people and us during the exam season. It is such a critical time for us to work together to ensure that our young people are given the most support possible to do their very best and show off all of the amazing learning that they have done.

Focus On .. Culture Week

Culture Week aims to broaden the mindset of young people, encouraging them to further recognise and value culture and diversity. Through learning about and having an awareness of culture and diversity we hope students can make more sense of the world. Diversity in religion and music for example demonstrates the richness of culture and we hope to bring this to the students.

Year 7 STEM

Year 7 pupils have been recycling plastic bottle lids, instead of putting litter in recycling bins, they have been doing the recycling themselves! The lids are made from HDPE which has a low melting temperature and to do this we used a heat press. The pupils used coping saws to cut out the shapes they had chosen before sanding the edges and drilling holes for the key rings to go through.

This mini project was fun, creative and good for the environment!

Year 9 Art Bytes Competition

Year 9 artists have entered a national competition – Art Bytes. Our pupils have submitted a fantastic range of works from their ‘childhood’ project – creating reflecting and nostalgic ceramic pieces inspired by Turner Prize winning artist Grayson Perry. We are so proud of their work, and think that their outcomes are really creative and original!

The judges have shortlisted their 3 favourite pieces – and now we need your votes! Please follow the link below to view all artwork submitted, and to cast your vote for your winning piece.

Voting closes 30 April.

Our winning artist will go on to be judged against the winners from other schools – and the school that receives the most votes also receives a prize, so every click counts!
