Welcome back to Term 2.
The Year 11 have approached their mock exams with huge maturity this week and should be congratulated on their positive attitude.
Enrichment day yesterday enabled our young people to benefit from some fantastic experiences. Year 7 loved Smoothie Day and I was privileged to take part in the tasting and judging. Congratulations to 7JXB for their thoughtful, tasty and well marketed win! Year 8 had an engaging day at the Science Museum, Year 9 learned about World War 1 and Year 10 focused on developing their revision skills. Year 12 visited Reading University and Year 13 met with their tutors to discuss their applications for life after Hardenhuish.
Thank you to all staff for the time, effort and preparation that goes in to making these days such a fantastic success.
Arena Eventing Champs
On Thursday 17 October, Amelia Niker, Darcy Selman, Abigail Wood and Poppy Leather represented Hardenhuish School at the NSEA Championships at Addington for the Arena Eventing Champs. This was a fantastic venue with a huge amount of competition, and it was probably the most technical and daunting course that these girls had ever faced.
The girls arrived in plenty of time for a warm-up only to be told that they were on next, so it was a big rush but off they went! The girls and their ponies were fantastic and ended up coming sixth, which was a brilliant achievement for such young riders and all looking so smart in the Hardenhuish team kit.

Year 8 Netball Matches vs Sheldon
Team 1 – 11-8 Loss MVP-Phoenix Harding
Team 2 – 7-7 Draw MVP-Lola Parry Jones
Team 3 – 11-8 Win MVP-Madeleine Webb
This was a fantastic set of results from our Year 8 Netballers on the last week on term. All teams were trying out new positions and new set play, working towards the netball season this half term.
Team 1 came up against a very strong Sheldon side, but held their own right up to quarter 3 with the game going goal for goal. Tasha W and Tilly W worked hard in defence and Erin K provided good support play to transition the ball up the court. The attacking combo of Darcy S, Phoenix H and Izzy L who worked hard throughout the game, moving constantly and driving forward into space. The shooting partnership of Paige L, Naomi R and Hollie A showed precision when needed and took their chances when they could. Overall, it was a good team performance and great to see potential for the future!
Team 2’s game was a fast and furious affair with the girls producing some great transition play through the midcourt with Katelyn I, Sophie D, Izzy P. The shooting pair, Lily R and Charlotte W, worked their angles excellently to create space; just a bit more confidence needed to shoot from anywhere in the ‘D’.
The defensive end was well managed by Lola P-J, Tilly R, Ella E and Taylor H. They were able to make some well-timed interceptions and blocks when necessary.
Team 3 showed great attacking play throughout the game taking the lead from early on and being able to maintain it. Maya E, Damaris D-V and Lucy P moved quickly around the circle edge to ensure they were able to capitalise on quick movement by Madeleine W, Alice S and Elysia D to create goal scoring opportunities. The defensive work by Ginny H-B, Emily E, Amber V and Izzy A was very strong with them being able to hold their positions and make well-timed interceptions as well as putting pressure on Sheldon’s every shot!
Overall a great afternoon of netball played from both sides!

Resource Centre News
It has been a busy start to the new term, with Year 7s beginning to receive their free ‘Bookbuzz’ books in library lessons this week. If you haven’t received yours yet, you will in your next library lesson! It was another superb selection of titles available to choose from this year, with ‘Still Water’ by Chris Priestley proving the most popular, and we are very grateful for Booktrust for such a wonderful initiative.
We also received a certificate this week to celebrate Hardenhuish as a leading participant in Readathon campaigns dating back to 1996. We have raised over £10,500 over the past two decades to help the charity Read for Good support libraries and children’s hospitals across the country – another superb scheme which we are delighted to be involved with. The charity stated:
“One in two schools has run our Readathon at some point since they began but only a handful in the country have embraced it like Hardenhuish”.
We look forward to running another Readathon during the spring term and full details of how you can get involved will be communicated in English lessons then.
Finally, this week has seen a great selection of new books added to our stock including:
‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball’ by Jeff Kinney
‘With The Fire on High’ by Elizabeth Acevedo
‘Wayward Son’ by Rainbow Rowell
‘Jemima Small Versus The Universe’ by Tamsin Winter
‘The Taylor Turbochaser’ by David Baddiel
‘The Somerset Tsunami’ by Emma Carroll
‘Dork Diaries: Spectacular Superstar’ by Rachel Renee Russell
‘Slay’ by Brittney Morris
‘Check Mates’ by Stewart Foster
As well as these novels, there are also new manga collections, graphic novels by Rainbow Rowell and Raina Telgemeier, a trio of the latest gaming books and biographies on BTS and Billie Eilish for you to enjoy.
Next week we have our first big event of the school year with our Year 7 Poetry Slam workshops taking place on Thursday and Friday. We hope Year 7 are looking forward to the opportunity to get creative and showcase their linguistic and drama skills over the two days! Please note though that we will be closed to other students whilst these workshops take place.
