At the end of another busy term, I am amazed at the wide range and number of fantastic achievements of our young people – they are an absolute credit to our school and themselves.
I have recently received a number of emails expressing concern regarding pupils and parents using mobile phones whilst travelling to and from school both on foot and in cars and thus reducing their awareness. I am hopeful that a road safety and awareness reminder will prevent a serious accident.
I wish Year 11 and Year 13 the very best of luck as they leave us today for study leave. It has been an absolutely lovely end to the term I and hope that all members of our community have a restful May break.
British Triathlon Federation Super Series
This year James and Megan Wright are competing in the British Triathlon Federation Super Series events as detailed below:
On Saturday 12 May, Megan competed at Llanelli in the second event of the Series. This was her first beach start and a whole new experience at this level of competition. Starting in position 33 she had an amazing race in all three disciplines, leading her bike group into T2, finishing 25th.
On Sunday 13 May, she took part in the May Mile, slightly closer to home, winning the Under-17 Girls’ event. Paralympic Tri-athlete David Hill presented her with her trophy.
Music Exam Success
Congratulations to Millie Pass who got a distinction in her Grade 3 Music Theatre exam.
Team Bath Buccaneers Hockey Team
Congratulations to Abbie Durrant who plays for the Team Bath Buccaneers hockey team. They won the Avon Junior Hockey League on Sunday by beating Stourport A 3-1 followed by Stourport B after penalties (4-4 after full time with 2-0 on penalties).
On Wednesday 16 May, 117 Year 9 pupils visited the National Oceanographic Centre in Southampton that included the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre and the British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility. Their visit coincided with one of NERC’s research ships, RRS James Cook, being in the dock next to the Centre and so the pupils were able to go on board and meet members of the crew. As well as seeing the ship’s laboratories, the pupils learnt about all the cutting-edge engineering required for exploration and research in the more extreme environments on earth. After the trip, one pupil said, “The trip was truly eye-opening, showing us what the UK does for marine science”. Another said, “It opened up different potential career paths for me to consider”.
St Nicholas Church Visits
This term in PSRE our Year 7 pupils have been asking the question – what would a Church be like for all Christians? As part of their learning, pupils visited St Nicholas Church where they were investigating church features to discover which Christian denomination worships there.
Pupils have thoroughly enjoyed their visits and have even made some discoveries about where names of rooms here at Hardenhuish such as Clutterbuck and Ricardo have come from. Thank you to Charles Carter from St Nicholas for his warm welcome and superb knowledge of the church!
Year 9 and Year 10 Rounders Fixtures
On a beautiful sunny afternoon this week our Year 9 and 10s took to their first rounders fixtures of the season. The Year 10 Girls soon got to grips with their opponents displaying strong hitting skills using the spaces and making sure they stayed focus during their fielding to keep the rounders to the minimum. The girls walked away with 2 wins and 1 loss which was a great achievement.
The Yr9 Girls started the competition well using their skills that they have learnt at training producing some fine catches and quick thinking within the posts. The girls hitting improved throughout the fixtures and both teams excelled themselves. We look forward to seeing you a training after half term.
County Cricket Selection
A huge congratulations to Victoria Stone who has been selected for the Wiltshire Cricket Summer Squad. The PE department are very proud of her and wish her good luck in her first game!
Chippenham Music Cluster Vocal Event
The Year 10 Vocal group performed on Tuesday 22 May at the Olympiad as part of the Chippenham Music Cluster Vocal event. The evening was full of performances from local Primary schools and Hardenhuish Year 10 Vocal Group were invited to come and sing to the Primary pupils and audience. They were fantastic and an inspiration to the younger singers. They performed a version of a Spiritual round and Bohemian Rhapsody and were a real credit to the school.

Ross Clifton, who left Hardenhuish in 2014, has recently been selected by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s leading casting director to play Brad in the UK National Tour of Hairspray. After leaving Hardenhuish, Ross completed three years performing training and was also fortunate to be awarded a place twice with the National Youth Music Theatre. On graduating, he gained his first job as a lead singer/dancer on an ‘around the world’ cruise ship. Well done, Ross!
