  • Daily and weekly national and local newspapers, plus a selection of magazines and a newspaper archive.
  • Careers Library – an extensive selection of Careers information, university prospectuses and books on teenage issues
  • Student Supplies shop – supplies of student essentials and basic stationery.
  • Hardenhuish Archive – yearbooks, newsletters, photos, newspaper clippings and other school materials dating from the 1970s.
  • Scholastic Book Club – an opportunity for pupils to buy books at discounted prices, with an annual Book Fair providing the same opportunity every March.

Events

A number of annual events take place here – most notably the Poetry Slam workshops for Year 7s each January, our visiting poet Ash Dickinson holding a series of workshops for Year 8s, and a number of visitors and events coinciding with World Book Day early in March.

In recent years, we have also had visits from Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, BBC journalist Robin Lustig, Times journalist Rick Broadbent, authors Joffre White, Katy Krump, Leo Aylen, Sarah Singleton and Stuart Hill , careers workshops from a host of local businesses, cricketer Henry Olonga and Holocaust survivor Zigi Shipper.

How is the Resource Centre used?

Once a fortnight in Year 7, each English class will have a lesson in the Resource Centre. A Year 7 Induction programme introduces pupils to using many of these facilities, while the Research and Study Skills programme in the second half of the year builds up an understanding of how to successfully conduct research using the resources that are available. Plenty of time each lesson is also devoted to reading for pleasure.

Other year groups have library lessons in English to coincide with particular units being studied in class and many other subjects also make use of the facilities on a regular basis for individual and group research tasks. The Resource Centre is always open throughout break time, lunchtime and for an hour after school (except on Friday) for pupils who need to borrow/return books, quietly read or complete homework.

The library system works just like any other library. Once a pupil has joined, they are able to borrow three books at a time, for two weeks at a time. There is no fine system at Hardenhuish, although all pupils are of course expected to return books on time. Books can also be renewed and reserved when required.

“The library lessons have been really useful to me. We quickly learnt how to find books and then the research skills tasks have been very helpful” Year 7 pupil

We’ve continued to use the library a lot this year – it’s a really nice place to be and our research lessons here have enabled us to find the information we need and get a head-start on projectsYear 9 pupil

Between April and June 2012, the Resource Centre underwent significant refurbishment, making it one of the most spacious and modern of its kind in Wiltshire. The pupils and students have embraced the changes fantastically, with a great working and purposeful atmosphere evident across many library lessons and in free time.
